Please support Team McCarthy Tetrault in OneWalk. One Day. ALL Cancers.
I am pleased to be an Honourary Chair of OneWalk and Leader of Team McCarthy Tetrault. I appreciate your support for the ground-breaking research being done at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the leading cancer research hospital in Canada and one of the top five comprehensive cancer research centres in the world.
The Shoppers Drug Mart® OneWalk™ to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is a game-changing movement to conquer cancer once and for all. On September 12th, 2015, Team McCarthy Tetrault will walk 25 kms through the streets of Toronto, united with thousands of others, knowing that together we are changing the future for all those affected by this terrible disease.
Cancer has touched too many of our colleagues, families and friends. A shocking 40% increase in new cancer cases is expected over the next 15 years. There is someting we can do about this - we can help fund Princess Margaret Cancer Centre's research, treatment and support for people living with cancer and their families. I am inspired by what the funds raised are being used for.
I am particularly excited about the new drug CFI-400945 that Dr. Tak Mak and his team at Princess Margaret have started in Phase 1 clinical trials in 2014. In the lab this new drug has been effective in slowing the growth of several different kinds of cancer - breast, ovarian, colorectal, glioblastoma, lung, melanoma, pancreatic and prostate cancers. The funds to discover and now to bring this drug to clinical trial were raised by the Weekend to End Women's Cancers. In taking CFI-400945 to clinical trials, Dr. Tak Mak is collaborating with Dr. Dennis Slamon of UCLA. Dr. Slamon discovered that Herceptin was effective in the treatment of HER-2 Positive tumours. It is extremely rare for an academic group to have discovered and advanced a novel "first-in-class" drug to clinical trial. The funds to discover and now to conduct clinical trials were raised by the Weekend to End Women's Cancers (predecessor to OneWalk). Funds are needed to keep Dr. Tak Mak's work going.
I am also encouraged by the great progress being made at Princess Margaret in stem cell research, immunotherapy and cancer genomics.
I have a deep appreciation for the exceptional, cutting-edge care that is provided at Princess Margaret.
My sister Andrea created Team Carroll in 2013, which we expanded into Team McCarthy Tetrault for the 2014 Weekend to End Women's Cancers (predecessor to OneWalk). Team McCarthy Tetrault raised $80,478 for the 2014 Walk and was recognized as the Industry Challenge Winner, Top Team Fundraising, Law and Service thanks to incredibly generous support from McCarthy Tetrault LLP, family and friends.
I ask you to join in this life-saving journey. Giving, walking, or spreading the word about the exceptional work being done at Princess Margaret are all ways we can help. We have the opportunity to change thousands of lives.
Thank you so much!
