On December 18, 2013, I was told “It’s cancer.” The moment was surreal. I had never heard of thyroid cancer, and the notion that it was a “good cancer” to get depended on your point-of-view. Cancer is cancer. It invades your daily life, your thoughts and your physical well being. You don’t need to have any symptoms. You don’t need to look or feel sick. It can be a fluke find; however, you need to do everything possible to remain positive. I, my husband, son and daughter had to come to terms with our new reality. We had a new “addition” to our family dynamic and it was going to change things a bit, but we couldn’t let it take over.
I referred to my surgery, radiation, scans and treatments as spa appointments, since it made everything seem that much better. It also helped to lighten the reality and put some other people at ease. You don’t want people to shy away. You want people to know, to discuss it and to be aware for their own sakes. We kept the dialogue open and answered the questions. Our family and friends surrounded us with the strength we needed to get over the physical hurdles, and through the emotional and mental ones.
My father received the same news on December 19, 2016--three years plus a day to my own diagnosis. I thought, no problem…been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I can walk him through surgery and then the follow up radiation and treatments. Unfortunately, his type of thyroid cancer was determined to be rare and extremely aggressive. After a brief but determined fight, my father passed away six weeks later. The fact that I was deemed to be cancer-free only a few weeks after his passing was emotional and bittersweet. I know he played a hand in my results, so I give thanks from that perspective.
My experience has taught me to stay positive, remain strong and not to let it get the better of you. You’re stronger than you think. Cancer just helps you realize it.
