Please support Team McCarthy Tetrault in OneWalk. One Day. ALL Cancers.
I am pleased to serve as an Honorary Chair, Industry Chair of Legal, Professional, and Public Services Sectors of OneWalk and Leader of Team McCarthy Tetrault. I deeply appreciate your incredibly generous support for the ground-breaking research being done at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the leading cancer research hospital in Canada and one of the top five comprehensive cancer research centres in the world.
OneWalk™ to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is a game-changing movement to conquer cancer once and for all. On September 9, 2017 Team McCarthy Tetrault will walk 25 kms through the streets of Toronto, united with thousands of others, knowing that together we are changing the future for all those affected by cancer.
Cancer has touched too many of our colleagues, families and friends. On June 20, 2017 the Canadian Cancer Society published sobering statistics: nearly 1 in 2 Canadians is expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 4 Canadians will die from the disease. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada. There is something we can do about this - we can help fund Princess Margaret Cancer Centre's research, treatment and support for people living with cancer and their families. I am inspired by what the funds raised are being used for.
I am particularly excited about the new drug CFI-400945 that Dr. Tak Mak and his team at Princess Margaret currently have in clinical trials. In the lab this new drug has been effective in slowing the growth of several different kinds of cancer - breast, ovarian, colorectal, glioblastoma, lung, melanoma, pancreatic and prostate cancers. The funds to discover and to bring this drug to clinical trial were raised by the Weekend to End Women's Cancers (predecessor to OneWalk) and OneWalk is raising funds to keep Dr. Tak Mak's work going. In taking CFI-400945 to clinical trials, Dr. Tak Mak is collaborating with Dr. Dennis Slamon of UCLA. Dr. Slamon discovered that Herceptin was effective in the treatment of HER-2 Positive tumours. It is extremely rare for an academic group to have discovered and advanced a novel "first-in-class" drug to clinical trial.
I am also encouraged by the great progress being made at Princess Margaret in stem cell research, immunotherapy and cancer genomics. Please see Princess Margaret's 2016 research report to read about the groundbreaking work you are supporting:http://www.thepmcf.ca/getattachment/News-Media/Latest-News/2017/UHN-2016-Research-Report/RR2016_web_1.pdf.aspx
I have a deep appreciation for the exceptional, cutting-edge care that is provided at Princess Margaret, and I am personally forever grateful for the outstanding treatment and care that I have received from Princess Margaret.
A huge, heartfelt thank you for the incredibly generous support we have received from McCarthy Tetrault LLP, family and friends. My sister Andrea created 11 member Team Carroll in 2013 which raised $67,681 and which we expanded into 23 member Team McCarthy Tetrault which raised $80, 479 for the 2014 Weekend to End Women's Cancers (predecessor to OneWalk). Team McCarthy Tetrault raised $113,375 for the 2015 OneWalk and $124,499 for the 2016 OneWalk. With your help, we hope to continue to increase our contribution in 2017. In fact, for 2017, Canada's 150th birthday, we are setting a bold goal for Team McCarthy Tetrault to raise $150,000 to support Princess Margaret Cancer centre, Canada's iconic leader in cancer research.
I ask you to please join in this life-saving journey. Giving, walking, or spreading the word about the exceptional work being done at Princess Margaret are all ways we can help. We have the opportunity to change thousands of lives.
Thank you so much!
