This is why it matters...
OneWalk to Conquer Cancer™ is The Princess Margaret's next-generation fundraiser to conquer ALL cancers. The funds raised will help enable the Princess Margaret Hospital’s team of world-leading clinicians and researchers to detect cancers earlier, diagnose with more precision, target treatment for each patient and support patients and their families throughout the cancer journey.
This is a personal story, but not as you might think. My daughter has been affected but she does not have nor has she battled cancer. This is about how young children, their friends and classmates have been affected. This is a story about my daughter and her classmates: 2 have each lost a parent, 1 had an older sibling diagnosed (& currently in remission) and another had a mother beat it (Hurray!). All this over a very short 4 year span dating from grades 2 to 6 (ages 6-10!).
She and her friends have remarkably and entirely on their own, rallied together and raised awareness and funds over the years in many in-school and out-of-school events. These very young girls acted as very mature, single-focussed young adults and did not let the situations defeat them. They collectively saw each event as a call to action. The friends and their families reached out and supported the immediate families with simple supports like, leaving cooked meals on their doorstep, chauffering kids, arranging errands and many other everyday supports. It may sound trivial, but when the world revolves around caring for the convalescing, these everyday tasks feel like climbing Mount Kilamanjero! These kids are our future: what leaders they will become! How proud we all are of them: of how immediately they rally to a cause and how mature they can be when the time suits. The very same kids who can barely get up in the morning to get to school, or forget homework or lose their belongings... As the mother of one of these kids, its all about perspective...
Team Andrea was created in 2015. Andrea lost her battle leaving behind a beautiful young child she adopted from China, and a close friend of my daughter. The girls have been involved from the start but in 2017 the girls completed the 25km walk in very good time. My daughter suffered some nasty blisters, but with the pain of bloodied feet, once crossing the finish line, she marched straight to the 2018 registration table and signed up again!
I'm asking you to join me today by either registering to Walk, making a donation to my personal fundraising goal (or to anyone on Team Andrea). Through the support of OneWalk, we will help The Princess Margaret make life better (& a little bit easier) for those fighting their cancer and the families and communities that support them. I am asking you to hear what our children have to say, to recognize the example they have set, and quite frankly, to follow their lead.
THIS IS WHY IT MATTERS.....
On behalf of the the survivors, their families and our children, who have set the bar high and led by example, a very heartfelt THANK YOU for whatever you can do to help. I have no doubt that Andrea is proudly watching on, a grin from ear to ear, as her daughter and her close knit circle of friends and community take action in her memory.
Together we can and WILL make a difference.
