My Dad, My Hero!
My 2018 Story:
Friends and Family,
2017 was all about hope and optimism and sadly, 2018 is about the reality of what Cancer is: a horrible, horrible disease.
I stated in my 2017 walk that my father was the stem cell donor for his sister Filomena who was diagnosed with leukemia and who had received amazing treatment from Princess Margaret. Sadly, she fell short of her disease and passed away peacefully with her family beside her at PMH December 6th 2017.
At the same time, December 6th, 2017, my father was admitted to PMH due to complications from his cancer and after various treatments and procedures, he passed away peacefully December 30th with his wife, children, siblings and family by his side. I have to say, my father had a beautiful life and a beautiful death; not many people get to experience the love that my father had in his lifetime and to be surrounded by love during his last breath will always be something I will cherish.
It was my dad’s goal to ring the Bravery Bell at PMH to announce the completion of his chemotherapy, he was not able to do that – so it is my goal to raise $10,000 so that I can do that for him in his honour!
In life, we don’t always get what we want – my father would have been 65 years old on January 10th, getting ready to retire and spend the summers with my mother driving around in his Fiat (his first car he ever owned)! Cancer took him too soon… it took Filomena at 60, Natalie at 56, Lidia in her 40s, Santina at 2…This is the face of cancer… It does not discriminate, it takes the young, it takes the old, it takes the rich, it takes the poor… it takes the ones we love.
I have no doubt in my mind that PMH has done everything possible to treat my father; at no point have I asked “what if they did this…” as I know that the team of oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, doctors (etc) have looked to their sources to give my father the best quality of care…for that, I continue to be thankful.
I ask that you continue to be generous and make a meaningful contribution, there is not one person I know that has not been effected or affected by cancer. It is my goal that no one cries…
Thank you for reading my story – I hope that you will be part of my journey as I walk the streets of Toronto in September!
My 2017 Story:
For those who don't know, let me tell you a story, 2 years ago my father was honoured to be the stem cell donor for my Aunt Filomena who was diagnosed with Leukaemia. She is a patient of Princess Margaret and has received fabulous treatment and services for her cancer. She is getting ready to celebrate her 2nd birthday shortly!
Fast forward to today, my father was diagnosed with cancer in April and it has been a very emotional time for us. He, by miracle, had been accepted to Princess Margaret who took him on as an exception as he had a undiagnosed primary cancer. Through the tools in research, they have been able to determine the source of his cancer and has started his treatment in June. While we are hopeful and optimistic, we also know that he will never be cured of his cancer, but we hope for a great quality of life for years to come - because of research!
I am also walking for my beautiful Aunts, Natalie & Lidia, who were not able to overcome this terrible disease and for my dearest grandmother, Egle.
In memory of my aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends who have departed. For you, I walk.
OneWalk. One Day. ALL Cancers.
OneWalk to Conquer Cancer(tm) is The Princess Margaret's next-generation fundraiser to conquer ALL cancers. The funds I raise through OneWalk support Personalized Cancer Medicine at The Princess Margaret, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world, enabling its world-leading clinicians and researchers to detect cancers earlier, diagnose with more precision, target treatment for each patient and support patients and their families throughout the cancer journey.
On one day, I will Walk united with thousands of survivors and supporters who have fundraised and trained to participate. Together we will march 25km through Toronto, making history in the fight to conquer cancer.
I'm asking you to join me today by either registering to Walk or making a donation to my personal fundraising goal. Through the support of OneWalk, we will help The Princess Margaret make life better for those facing cancer.
Together, we can conquer cancer in our lifetime!
