Welcome to My Personal Page
OneWalk™ to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is a game-changing movement to conquer cancer once and for all. I will walk 25 kms through the streets of Toronto, united with thousands of others, knowing that together we are changing the future for all those affected by this terrible disease.
Could you please join this life-saving adventure for all those touched by cancer? Be a part of my very personal journey - by giving, by walking with me, or simply by sharing my story. Don’t stand back and think about what you could have done! We have the opportunity to change thousands of lives, beginning with our own.
This isn’t just my journey – it’s yours, too.
November 1st, 2010 is a day that will forever be etched into my memory & the very essence of my being, this is the day I received “that phone call”; my Mom had been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Given the distance that separated us (she lived in South Africa, while I live in Canada) I decided to channel my energies to this worthwhile cause to help find a cure for cancer; for the last 8 years I have fundraised and walked in the hopes that someday a cure for cancer will be found.
While I continue to walk in memory of my Mom, Thelma Watson, my Aunt Mavis Young and my friend Ada Grella, this year again, I dedicate my walk to my earth Angel & Dear Friend Belinda Naidoo. For all these women of strength and grace, I walk for you and will continue to walk until a cure is found.
In June 2015 Belinda was diagnosed with metastasized breast cancer. Over the past two years I have been inspired by Belinda’s courage, determination and strong faith as she worked her way through chemo treatments, medication and everything else that anyone who has to deal with the realities of cancer has to endure. Belinda is the kindest, most compassionate person I have ever met; she is also one of the most loyal and generous people I have had the pleasure of knowing in my life. She is a beautiful soul, whose light shines so brightly, you know when she enters a room here is goodness and love personified. Belinda is supported by an army of love, the love of her family & friends.
Once again, I have contemplated not walking, thinking “I have done my bit”. However, a recent visit to Old Montreal, was a clear sign that this is not an option. As if to echo this sentiment, a down pour of rain gushing down the streets of this beautiful city, ignited memories of another day, another time, a day I walked these streets, in the rain with my Mom and Aunt Mavis ten years ago making beautiful memories, never dreaming that too soon they would be taken from me.
The last couple of years it has rained on the day of the walk, making it a miserable and uncomfortable; however when put into perspective, Belinda and anyone else living with the challenges of cancer has to contend with so much more, discomfort and unbearable pain as part of their daily routine. I am always amazed at the number of people who come out to support us on the route of the walk, including people who have been diagnosed with cancer. When they thank us for making a difference I know the work is not done, one particular moment that truly touched my heart is the story of a young Mother, who had parked her car along the route, he little son (6-8 years old) was dancing in the street, the Mom stopped me and said; “Because of you I am here”. I say, it is because of YOU…….everyone who has ever supported me over the last eight years, you have made a difference to this young Mother & her dancing boy and so many families such as hers.
I will be participating in this amazing event walking 25-kilometre with my friends and colleagues on the American Express team. I know that taking action to make a difference can and does impact lives all around the world, so hopefully one day a cure for cancer will be found. For the last eight years Belinda and Mark have been one of my most generous contributors and supporters, not knowing that they too would be traveling the Cancer Highway. I am asking for your support to celebrate Belinda’s courage and strength through your contributions, and through your prayers. Belinda is joined by millions of people annually on this journey to overcome cancer, so I walk this year for Belinda, and for the hope that a cure for cancer can be found in our lifetime.
Cancer has affected my family & friends directly and has probably touched some of you in the same way as well. I would appreciate your support again this year through a cash donation and/or also passing my note/URL link to any of your friends, family or colleagues who would like to help me fight this disease. The net proceeds for our fundraising will benefit The Princess Margaret Hospital here in Toronto and all the women whose lives are affected by cancer.
Please click on the url and follow the instructions for making online donations, for my "international friends", donations can be charged directly to your credit card.
